Paul Wilson, Lawrence Watt-Evans, Basil Copper, Poppy Z. Brite, Fred Chappell, Michael Shea, Kim Newman, Joanna Russ 1999/01/01 4 Del Rey, 1999 WAAAAAAY better than it has any right or need to be. My fave pieces are by Zelazny, Copper, and the humorous piece by Friesner.
The Starry Wisdom D.M. Mitchell, Alan Moore, Ramsey Campbell 1999/01/01 5 Creation Books, 2003 Stories by Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, William S. Burroughs, Michael Gira of the Swans, and many many others. It’s probably the sickest collection of Lovecraft-inspired stories I’ve read, and it’s great.
From Hell Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell 1998/01/10 5 Top Shelf Productions, 2004 Takes one of MANY theories about Jack the Ripper and transforms it into a chaotic, delirious story about consciousness, class, and magic. Plus, Moore annotates the whole thing, so all you fact-checkers (like me) can follow up on source material. The version I have concludes with a great comic/essay about the history of ripper-ology, and is both funny, and a good read.
The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare G.K. Chesterton, Jonathan Lethem, José Laurênio de Mello 1998/01/01 0 Modern Library, 2001

Foucault’s Pendulum Umberto Eco, William Weaver 1998/01/01 5 Mariner Books, 2007 A critique of post-modern history, wrapped in one hell of a funny historical mystery. Taught me critical theory before I knew what that was.
Get in the Van: On the Road With Black Flag Henry Rollins 1998/01/01 5 2.13.61, 2004
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wicked Years, #1) Gregory Maguire, Douglas Smith 1997/07/30 4 ReganBooks, 2000

House of Leaves Mark Z. Danielewski 1997/01/01 5 Pantheon Books, 2000 The only book I’ve read in recent memory to actually scare the shit out of me.
1984 George Orwell 1997/01/01 5 New American Library, 1950

The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald 1997/01/01 5 Scribner, 1925
The Fountainhead Ayn Rand, Leonard Peikoff 1997/01/01 3 Signet Book, 1996 Made a lot of sense when I was 16. Now, not so much… actually, it just kind of pisses me off.
The Long Hard Road Out of Hell Marilyn Manson, Neil Strauss 1997/01/01 3 ReganBooks, 1999
Watchmen (Watchmen, #1-12) Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, John Higgins 1997/01/01 5 DC Comics, 2005 Not sure what to say…. it’s canon, at this point. If you know or care anything about the role of superheroes in 20th century western culture, you should read this. Even if you don’t, it’s a great story about authority, power, fate, and responsibility, and contains the best writing and art the format (comics) has to offer.
