Ready Player One (Ready Player One, #1) Ernest Cline 2011/09/27 4 Crown Publishers, 2011 A love letter to geek culture, wrapped in a treasure-hunting adventure, wrapped in a dystopian science-fiction epic. I really enjoyed reading the book, though I found the ending to be a little abrupt for my taste. Still, what a ride getting there!

Tricks of the Mind Derren Brown 2011/01/01 4 Channel 4, 2007 “An interesting discussion of magic theory, with a particular emphasis on mental magic (memory tricks, hypnotism, etc…) The chapter on memory is one that I plan on studying more closely, for clues on how to remember things better! Likewise, the chapter on hypnosis is fascinating, and really gives a broad treatment to the complex and variable phenomena that we lump under the heading of ““hypnosis””. "

The Magicians (The Magicians, #1) Lev Grossman 2011/01/01 4 Viking, 2009 Really liked this book. I hate using cultural reference equations, but the best way to describe this book would be Harry Potter + Chronicles of Narnia + Catcher in the Rye. It’s about a disgruntled teenager who discovers that he can attend a school for magicians, where he meets strange and wonderful people, falls in love, and gets in adventures. And then things start to break down, culminating in what could charitably be called a tragic conclusion. There’s a lot of internal monologue and soul searching in this book, so if that’s not your cup of tea, stay away. On the other hand, there’s crazy magic, monsters, and fantastic lands, so…go figure.

Lovecraft Unbound Various 2011/01/01 4 Dark Horse Books, 2009 An interesting anthology in which various authors write in homage to lovecraft, but without specifically referencing his mythos or characters. There are some successes and some mediocre attempts, but when it works, it really works.
